Aftercare Instructions: Chemical Peel

So here we are! Either you’ve just had your first Chemical Peel, or it’s been a while and you need a quick refresher on the best practices for aftercare. We know how it is. You leave a procedure, and you forget what your specialist said, and maybe you’re too embarrassed to call back and ask. We’ve all been there. That’s why we’ve come up with this “cheat sheet” you can refer to so you know what’s what. Think of it as our little secret! We both have a common goal: for you to look and feel your best! So let’s not let anything get in the way of that.

Wash your face with cool water

While we all know that nothing beats a good wash with warm or hot water, you will want to change it up for your Chemical Peel aftercare. For one thing, cool water will feel better. It’s also worth mentioning that cool water will help soothe post-peel sensations. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to give your face a good scrub with warm water in a few days, but for now, let’s keep it cool. And while we’re keeping it cool, pat that face dry instead of rubbing it!

Moisturize and hydrate

We’re not saying drink a gallon of water a day here (though it certainly wouldn’t hurt!), but you’re definitely going to want to step up your water game for sure. Dehydration will make your skin feel tight, so 6-8 cups of water please!

Since peels can temporarily compromise your skin’s protective barrier, it’s important to reinforce that barrier with a medium-to-thick moisturizer. When in doubt, contact us for what brands and how often to moisturize.

Apply Sunscreen with SPF 30 or more

If you’re going out, and when in doubt, apply SPF30 or higher. Your skin is more delicate after a peel, so avoiding direct sun exposure is a best practice. We know life gets in the way, and if you’re going to be exposed to sunlight, it’s best to arm yourself with some trusty sunscreen.

Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas, and steam rooms

Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching, redness, and other uncomfortable side effects on freshly peeled skin. On the day you have your Chemical Peel, it’s a good idea to skip the workout.

Don’t over exfoliate

We know you will want to pick at that wonderful peeling skin, but resist!

Over-exfoliating and picking can lead to more redness or sensitivity, so it’s a best practice to wait until your skin feels up to it. Once your skin feels “back to normal” after a peel, it’s generally considered okay to resume your normal skincare routine. When in doubt, talk to your professional about when you can get back to your usual regimen.

But wait, there’s more
